Having mental illness carries negative connotation

Having mental illness carries negative connotations, which results in social isolation withdrawal, and lower self-esteem and the stigmatization of the individual. Unlike most medical diagnoses, which do not stigmatize, labels of mental illness are widely viewed as stigmatizing the person who receives them Additionally, psychiatric labels such as schizophrenia are used incorrectly, contributing to the misconceptions of mental illness. These characterizations can have harmful consequences and contribute to the public fear of those with mental illness.
